U.S. Office for Human Research Protections IRB Registration

The United States Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) is concerned with the protection of the rights, welfare, and wellbeing of human subjects involved in research conducted or supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

All Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), also known as research ethics boards in Canada, must be registered with OHRP if they review:

  1. Research involving human subjects conducted or supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or other U.S. federal departments or agencies that apply the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (‘Common Rule’) to such research; and/or
  2. Clinical investigations regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Department of Health and Human Services
