Health Institutional Assessment

Before submitting your application, review the criteria below to determine whether your project requires Health Institution Assessment (HIA). Health institutional approvals are required if any of the following conditions apply:

  1. Does your project take place at any of the following facilities?

If your project is conducted at a Manitoba health facility, HIA is required.

  1. Does your project involve data from any of these facilities?

Using administrative, clinical, operational, or research data originating from these organizations will require HIA.

  1. Does your project involve staff, patients, or resources from these facilities?

This includes recruitment, interviews, chart reviews, clinical interactions, or operational involvement.

 

If you answer Yes to any of the above, you must obtain HIAs before your project can proceed.

 

Posting Posters or Sending Recruitment Emails (Out of Province applicants)

If you only wish to hang a poster or send out a recruitment email at a participating facility, please contact RITHIM for guidance.

RITHIM will provide instructions on how to submit your materials for review and approval.

Manitoba Health System: Organizations Requiring Approval

Below is an overview of the health authorities, hospitals, and health centers that may require HIA depending on your project.

  1. Regional Health Authorities

These organizations deliver health services within specific geographic regions:

  • Interlake–Eastern – Interlake & Eastern Manitoba
  • Northern Health Region – Northern Manitoba
  • Prairie Mountain Health – Western & Southwestern Manitoba
  • Southern Health–Santé Sud – South‑central & Southeastern Manitoba
  • Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) – City of Winnipeg & Churchill services
  1. Provincial Health Authorities

These organizations provide province‑wide services:

  1. Provincial Cancer Authority
  • CancerCare Manitoba – Manitoba’s provincial cancer authority responsible for cancer services, programs, and research.

Hospitals and Health Centres

Your project may require approval if it involves any of the following facilities:

  • Concordia Hospital
  • Grace Hospital
  • Health Sciences Centre
  • St. Boniface Hospital
  • Seven Oaks General Hospital / The Wellness Institute
  • Victoria General Hospital
  • Deer Lodge Centre
  • Misericordia Health Centre
  • Pan Am Clinic
  • Riverview Health Centre
  • Churchill Health Centre
  • St. Amant
  • WRHA Community facilities (e.g., Klinic, Nine Circles, ACCESS Centers)
  • Specialized Services for Children and Youth / Rehabilitation Centre for Children

Faith‑Based Health Care Organizations

Some Manitoba health facilities operate under faith‑based mandates.
In your application, please specify—if applicable—how your project will meet the criteria of faith‑based health care organizations.

This may include considerations related to mission, values, ethics, or organizational policies.
