Overview
Are you seeking a unique opportunity to help safeguard the privacy of personal health information while enabling impactful health research in Manitoba?
The Provincial Health Research Privacy Committee (PHRPC) plays a vital role in Manitoba’s health research ecosystem. The committee reviews health research project applications that request access to personal health information held by Manitoba trustees and carefully considers whether the public interest and importance of the research outweigh any potential intrusion into privacy. PHRPC also assesses whether appropriate safeguards are in place to ensure that personal health information is handled responsibly and in compliance with Manitoba’s privacy legislation.
We are currently seeking nominations for new PHRPC members.
As a member of PHRPC, you will:
-
Review applications requesting access to personal health information for research purposes
-
Evaluate whether proposed uses of information meet the requirements of Manitoba’s privacy laws, including The Personal Health Information Act
-
Assess whether adequate protections are in place to safeguard confidentiality and mitigate the risk of privacy breaches
-
Contribute to balanced, evidence-informed decisions that protect Manitobans while supporting high-quality research
We are seeking individuals from post-secondary institutions, health-care institutions and health authorities across Manitoba who have the requisite qualifications and experience. You may nominate yourself or a colleague.
Preferred qualifications include:
-
Experience assessing, interpreting and communicating the impact of privacy legislation in a research or health-care setting
-
A strong understanding of the importance of protecting the confidentiality of personal health information, including procedures to follow in the event of a privacy breach
-
Knowledge of administrative, clinical and or business datasets in one or more health system domains, including the implications of linking datasets
-
Familiarity with Manitoba’s The Personal Health Information Act and other relevant privacy legislation, such as The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
-
Expertise in privacy and data protection, health information management, legal or ethical aspects of research, or other related fields
Consistent with Research Manitoba’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, PHRPC strives to achieve equitable participation by including individuals with diverse experiences and attributes. We encourage individuals to self-identify as belonging to an underrepresented group. Every effort will be made to include qualified persons from diverse communities in the composition of the committee.
Kindly submit your nomination, along with a CV and short bio, to info@researchmb.ca.
